To distinguish properly, the colours of wires are mostly black and white for two conductor wiring and red, and black and green for three conductor wiring. In most cases, the black or black and red are used as hot wires for carrying current.

The green wire is generally neutral in nature, but not in all cases. You look sometimes the third wire and that is only the green wire, is used as a “hot’ or “switch leg” in the circuit. In these type of cases, you need to coat the end of the wire with electrical tape or fish tape to analyse it as such, to ensure that no one gets confused while using it.
